Superhero Spotlight: Nacht Leiter
by Erica Harrison
for the Paragon Times

Kaitlyn Leiter does not look like what you might expect
the leader of a superpowered military organization to
look like. She's a slight woman whose dark hair is cut
stylishly short, and she meets your eye confidently
through delicate glasses. Look past her outward
appearance, however, and you'll notice the determined
set of her shoulders, matched by the impeccable press
of her black leather uniform.

Leiter heads the group known as the Sixth Column, a
group of heroes who operate here in Paragon City.
When asked about the group's unusual name, she sighs.
"This is a question I get a lot," she says, "People ask me
if we're a group of neo-nazis, if we're infiltrating Paragon
for the 5th Column. Which we're not, obviously. The name
is a play on the concept of a 5th column."

The Sixth Column was founded by Leiter's father, James
Leiter, along with other men who defected from the 5th
Column in the early 60's. "My dad was a hero," she says
confidently. "He was indoctrinated into the 5th column as
a young man, and as soon as he saw them for what they
were, he defected and dedicated his life to fighting them."

Leiter seems to have followed steadily in her father's
footsteps. She joined the Sixth Column at 15, juggling
her career there with her studies, which she continued at
Paragon University. She earned a Doctor of Medicine degree,
combining her natural healing superpowers with medical
expertise. During her rise through the ranks of the Sixth
Column, she continued her pursuit of knowledge through
research into the nature of superpower manifestations.
Her work earned her an honorary Ph.D from Paragon
University.

"I got into my research because of my uncle, actually,"
she explains, "When his powers manifested, his life was
completely ruined; he ended up hurting those he loved
and had to flee for his life. I wanted to see if there was any
kind of pattern, so we could predict violent manifestations
before anyone got hurt. I couldn't give him back his life,
but I hoped I could help others."

Leiter continues to study power manifestation, as well
as the genetic transference of superpowers from parents
to children. She also continues her father's legacy of
leading the Sixth Column in their fight for the safety
of the people of Paragon City.

"I like to think he'd be proud of what I've done," she
says, a sad smile on her face. "In fact, I'm sure he
would be."
