Effect is a noun. Affect is a verb.

Haha, well I appreciate that. Confirmation that my future plans as an English professor aren't completely ridiculous.

This is true, but "effect" can also be used as a verb, meaning "to bring into effect", such as "we will be effecting our new rule tomorrow"
I noticed that while we were studying Woodrow's Fourteen Points today in history

True, though effect as a verb is used when referring to that which affected something else, where affect is used when referring to that which was affected.

i.e., We will be effecting our new rule tomorrow; the new rule will affect you.

The use of effect as a verb is rare, though a valid point.

And now that I have looked closely at both affect and effect, both look completely wrong to me.

I've got dictionary.com bookmarked and regularly use it.

Especially for effect/affect.

I was intending to make a quick and dirty guide that would work in most situations of the effect/affect situation but gave up once I'd worked out the following sentence:

The verb affect produces the noun effect.
